The expedition is planned and provided by the indigenous hosts who open their homes to show you their unique culture, traditions, and customs. Experience the most authentic and sustainable way to explore African nature, wildlife, and indigenous cultures in Tanzania.

In our culture explorer, we have excluded the indigenous living in the area that have adopted modern times living. We include typical indigenous Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai villages have been practiced in the same ways of living for hundreds of years.

This trip is a great privilege to learn from the Maasai and the earth. You can experience the balance and harmony between people and the environment and share collective indigenous wisdom.

The Hadzabe are hunter-gatherers who live only in Tanzania, in Lake Eyasi. There are estimated to be around 1300 Hadzabe people living in Tanzania. The Hadzabe indigenous wisdom contains the belief that we are all related, including all living and inanimate beings.

The Hadzabe grow no food, raise no livestock, and live without rules or calendars. Their way of life has remained unchanged over the millennia, and they live in small wandering groups of about twenty individuals.

The Datoga are Nilotic pastoralists living only in Tanzania who are semi-nomads (population about 85,000). They have a strong warrior tradition and male domination of political and social life.

Datoga are also talented blacksmiths. Join this adventure and deep dive into the indigenous cultures.

You learn the use of bush medication from Laibon –the Maasai doctor and where the Maasai warriors hang out in the savanna.

You will join and learn hunting by doing with Hadzabe indigenous of Lake Eyasi. You will join and explore Datoga handmade and other tribal activities.

You join the Maasai women in their daily life and every night you enjoy your bush dinner outside under the African sky full of stars. Fall asleep by listening to nocturnal sounds of Africa like hyena's laughing.

You join Datoga women local dinner preparation and may be cooking with them. This is a once in a lifetime indigenous culture to make!

Itineraries

We start our journey towards Lake Eyasi, where we stay with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers. You join one of these family units in the deep bush for three days. We join the Hadzabe men on their hunting trips and women on their gathering. The landscape is exceptionally stunning due to the high number of beautiful baobab trees and its extensive marshlands—accommodation in a tent. (B, L, D).

We join the Hadzabe hunting early in the morning and return to our campsite for breakfast brunch. In the afternoon, we continue towards Lake Eyasi, a seasonal shallow salt lake on the Great Rift Valley floor at the Serengeti Plateau base. We walk around the lake to observe waterbirds like flamingos and pelicans. We return to our bush camp to spend the evening singing and telling storing with the Hadzabe. (B, L, D).

After breakfast, we say goodbye to Hadzabe as we continue to stay with our Datoga family. We spend time with our hosts exploring the area and the Datoga way of life. After bush dinner, we gather around the campfire to hear and document Datoga's indigenous wisdom. You will overnight in the tent near Datoga's huts. (B, L, D).

After an early breakfast, we head to the first Maasai village which takes about 5 hours. We arrive at the Maasai village in the late afternoon. Welcoming celebrations by your Maasai hosts and setting up the camp in the savanna. Dinner is served al fresco under the African stars. (B, L, D).

After breakfast, get ready for your first bushwalk! Today you can try your skills in herding cattle with the Maasai boys and warriors. You will join the Maasai boys and warriors to herd cattle, and observe how Maasai women milk cows and goats. We walk with the Maasai herders in the remote savanna and explore the African savanna. We return back to our Maasai village for lunch. In the afternoon, we join the Maasai in village life. In the evening, we gather around the campfire and enjoy our bush dinner in a Maasai village. (B, L, D).

Today we visit another remote Maasai village. We have to travel by car, by rowboat, and on foot to reach this Maasai village. Now we go even deeper into the beautiful African bush. Enjoy the welcoming celebrations with much dancing and singing with the Maasai. Late afternoon return back to your lodge in Arusha (B, L, D).

Enjoy your lazy morning in a Lodge. After lunch, we transfer back to Kilimanjaro airport for your flight departure. You arrive at the airport around 4 pm. You can book an evening flight or extend your stay in Arusha. (B, L).
