Lake Natron National Park

Lake Natron National Park

Overview

Located just south of Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, a hike up the steep slopes of Oldonyo L’engai provides magnificent views, worthy of the challenge. Hike between the cones of lava to summit the crater and let the sights of the rift valley below, and the crater itself, take your breath away.

Oldonyo L’engai

Standing over 3000m (10,000 ft) high, the Maasai people named this active volcano “The Mountain of God.” The carboniferous lava, which turns white when it solidifies, is believed by the Maasai to symbolize the white beards of “Enkai.”

Geological Tours

Tanzania is rich in precious gems, not least of which is the exquisite blue Tanzanite that is found nowhere else in the world. Another treasure is the Tanzanian Ruby – a glowing red stone of rare appeal.

Mererani Tanzanite Mines

Located in the Merelani Hills in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, 70 km (43 mi) south of Arusha, the Mererani Tanzanite Mines are where the blue Tanzanite was first discovered in 1968, and are still mined both by local and large mine operators today.

Longido Ruby Mines

In 1949, rubies were discovered in the northeastern region of Longido near the Kenyan border. Today the area is known for its red and green "ruby in zoisite," also called "anyolite."
