9 Days Native Culture Explorer in Tanzania

10 Days Private Safari Tanzania

Overview

About the Maasai Experience

Explore the fascinating and authentic indigenous culture and go hiking in the Usambara mountains. Experience natives hiding in the lesser-known rural Tanzania and meet the friendliest and most welcoming native hosts who welcome you to stay in their homes. Less known means explorer is wanted.

You stay in a real native home (Maasai boma) “not an artificial cultural tourism” that gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself into the rich Maasai culture, Bushmen, blacksmith, and pastoralist lifestyle.

With your indigenous explorer, search for a Maasai boma that is very remote and hard to reach that you cannot find on Google routes. We travel by car, by rowboat, and explore on foot. This is an ultimate remote expedition where you can observe and participate in Maasai culture and explore the beauty of the remote African savanna and nature.

You learn how Maasai warriors use bush medication and where the Maasai warriors hang out in the savanna.

You join the Maasai women in their daily life and every night you enjoy your bush dinner outside under the African sky full of stars. Fall asleep by listening to the nocturnal sounds of Africa like hyenas laughing.

Explore the lush Usambara mountains with stunning sightings, learn from the natives and live their ways. This is a once in a lifetime indigenous culture to experience!

Itineraries

After an early breakfast, we head to the first Maasai village which takes about 5 hours. We arrive at the Maasai village in the late afternoon. Welcoming celebrations by your Maasai hosts and setting up the camp in the savanna. Dinner is served under the African stars. (B, L, D).

After breakfast, get ready for your first bushwalk! Today you can try your skills in herding cattle with the Maasai boys and warriors. Join the Maasai boys and warriors to herd cattle, and observe how Maasai women milk cows and goats. We walk with the Maasai herders in the remote savanna and explore the African savanna.

We return back to our Maasai village for lunch, perhaps slashing a goat. Participate yourself in goat slashing and roasting meat in the evening while gathering around the campfire and enjoy our bush dinner in a Maasai village. (B, L, D).

Today we visit another remote Maasai village. We have to travel by car, by rowboat, and on foot to reach this Maasai village. Now we go even deeper into the beautiful African bush. Enjoy the welcoming celebrations with much dancing and singing with the Maasai. (B, L, D).

After breakfast, we drive to Lushoto from where we start our two-day hiking journey. The Usambara mountains rise on average 2000m and with their pleasant cool mountain forests and phenomenal viewpoints. We sleep in a tent. (B, L, D).

We spend all day hiking in this incredibly beautiful and lush area that has been called the “Galapagos” of the plant world due to an exceptional assortment of birds, plants, and animals. Its mountain range is unspoiled and covered with tropical forests. We hike with our Maasai hosts. (B, L, D).

After breakfast, we drive back to Arusha where we arrive in the afternoon. We sleep in a lodge in Moshi and have dinner together with our Maasai staff. (B, L).

Enjoy your breakfast in Moshi town and then we drive an hour to reach the latest village before Kilimanjaro national park called “Materuni”. Join your local guide for about an hour hiking to the waterfall, swim, and then return to the hosts for a traditional lunch.

In the afternoon, join the coffee and ceremonial excursions which include traditional singing, coffee pounding, grinding, roasting until you make and drink coffee cup you made by your hand.

The local team will continue singing different songs including their local traditional songs and the ‘jambo-bwana-habari-gani’. That makes a great end of culture experience and transfer to overnight in Moshi town to easily catch up with your flight tomorrow.

After breakfast, we drive you to Kilimanjaro International airport when your flight departs. (B).

You sleep either in the African wilderness or in indigenous villages, which means a Maasai, Datoga, and Hadzabe homestead. You are accommodated in a comfortable tent (single share). We provide you all the camping supplies, including a trekking bed and a blanket.

There are no shower facilities, but you can have a bucket of warm water to wash yourself every day. Our bathroom is a hygienic portable trekking toilet.

Your food is prepaid in the bush by a Maasai chef. Tasty African food is made of traditional and fresh local ingredients. If you have a special diet, let us know in advance. We are happy to cater to all kinds of different diets.

You have safe filtered drinking water at all times. We also serve coffee, tea, sodas, and other local drinks. We avoid using plastic water bottles to conserve nature.
