Grumeti River migration crossing is less fame than Mara River migration and it’s therefore less visited, but it’s an amazing event you don’t need to miss especially if your safari in Tanzania falls in June and early July.
Safari books mostly impress Mara River based on the writer’s personal impression, remoteness of the area at the time they visited, guiding experience, also depending on season they visited Serengeti and these may be few to mention reasons this occasion overlooked.

“UNIQUE LOCATION”
Beginning from Arusha, we take you to western Serengeti which fed by the Grumeti and Mbalageti rivers whose waters guarantee a constant presence of wildlife. We guides you well explore western corridor area with series of extreme game drives following the time to scan Seronera the centre and the hub of the Serengeti’s ecosystem. Finally we drive from Serengeti to Ngorongoro, the extraordinary conservation area centered with its huge volcanic caldera.
‘WHY THIS TOUR’
Aiming to explore and search for wildebeests migrations in western Serengeti in June and July. The area is less visited and very impressive with animals while overlooked by most of safari operators who only loop around the accommodated areas in centre of Serengeti. Western corridor is one of the most impressive and we take you to explore the home to lions, hippopotamus and other big game while searching for wildebeests’ and zebra migrant tailed by their predators. The crocodiles that live in the Grumeti River are renowned as the largest in Africa. Feasting on the casualties from the river crossings of the gnus they can grow up to 6 meters (20 feet) long. Western corridor dense diversity is mostly impressive in June and July. When you know the timing it’s the place you will need every day you think of Serengeti. If that not enough we are going to scan the Central Serengeti like everyone else to search the other most famous places such as Retina hippo pool, Seronera river banks and the kopjes ‘rocky hills’. Your last day game watching will be inside the Ngorongoro crater. Descending this magical crater which is home to big five is even a memorable experience. Enjoy an amazing world hides in this largest unbroken caldera on Earth where rare black rhino call their habitat in Tanzania.
On your safari through Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater you switch your camera on to capture lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, buffalos, and cheetahs. Many predators can be found in the park, including all three species of African jackal. Enjoy seeing wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, impala hartebeest, topi and waterbuck wander the grasslands. Over 500 species of birds, insects and small creatures also call the Serengeti home.

The park, with its endless tree savannah including the impressive baobab trees and seasonal marshes, is also home to the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. In addition to elephants, you are also likely to spot giraffes, buffaloes, lions, zebras, gnus, and other types of antelopes and gazelles. Before we start our road trip hampered with game en-route to central Serengeti, we fill our stomachs with a hot delicious breakfast provided by our cook in the morning, pack our bags, and relax into your comfortable vehicle heading to Central Serengeti. Enjoy scenic landscapes as you drive up the escarpment before we enter Serengeti via the eastern gate called Naabi Gate.
We have about a 5-hour road trip drive to get to central Serengeti in the afternoon. We first start a 2-hour drive on the tarmac road from your campsite to Naabi Gate. We then continue en-route on a 145 km journey on rough road through Serengeti for 3 hours to Seronera.
Before leaving the Western Serengeti, we take the opportunity this morning to enjoy another game drive in this incredible location. This allows us further time to wonder at the migratory herds and the dangers and challenges they face each year in their battle for survival.
As well as the herd animals, you can look to the skies, perhaps finding a majestic martial eagle or one of the other birds that populate this area. Along with the thousands of migrating animals, this area also has a good population of resident wildlife, so you will never be disappointed. In the afternoon, we take the short drive to the central part of Serengeti, where after lunch a game drive will introduce you to this wildlife ‘hub.’
Finally, you will go to your chosen accommodation for relaxation and your evening hot cooked meal.
Waking up in Serengeti is real pleasant. Wake early to see the sunrise and start a game drive en-route to western Serengeti. Sights, sounds, and smells of Africa are all around us, and ahead is a full day of adventure in the world’s most famous national park.
After breakfast, and a morning game drive en-route, we set off for our next destination, the western Serengeti, a journey of 80 km with an expected time of about 2 hours. After the morning game drive, we take lunch and have an afternoon game drive.
Western Corridor will bring you wildlife adventures that will fill you with memories. Your driver-guide can choose from a number of ‘loops’ when searching out wildlife opportunities for you: these depart from and reconnect to the main road, visiting different types of vegetation and exploring varied habitats.
Two important rivers cross this region, and the permanent pools created by the Grumeti and Mbalageti ensure that animals can be seen all year-round. Populations of elephant and giraffe, wildebeest, baboons, and lions are all resident here, but the Migration time sets a different scene entirely.
In Migration times, your driver-guide will do all he can to ensure you witness a crossing. Huge crocodiles lurk in anticipation of the river crossing, looking to pick off a wildebeest or two as their herds plunge into the waters for the other side. Not always, so perhaps you will see not only a crossing, but a kill as well. Patience will bring its rewards – for crocodiles and for you, the visitor, poised with your camera!
The Mbalageti area also hosts the highest density of topi in Tanzania, so keep your eyes peeled. A rare and treasured sighting would be of an African wild dog; rare, but they can be seen in western Serengeti. At around 4:00 pm, we drive back to overnight at Seronera Campsite.
After your day of thrilling game drives, your driver will return you safely for another relaxing night at Seronera Campsite or Pimbi Campsite. Drink, relax, eat, and sleep, all out in the wilderness of the Serengeti.
Breakfast is enjoyed at the Serengeti Seronera by your cook. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by your cook for you to take out on safari. Your dinner will be a delicious meal at Seronera, prepared by your cook.
Today our adventure takes us out of the Serengeti National Park and leads us to another of Tanzania’s true wonders, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. With its wildlife-filled crater, Ngorongoro may be difficult to pronounce, but with its wildlife-filled volcanic crater it is easy to admire. Unsurprisingly, this is yet another of our country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
After a morning game drive and lunch, this afternoon we will head south-east towards Ngorongoro, a distance of 145 km which will take us around 3 hours on rough road.
After breakfast, we start today with the morning section of our game drive in Serengeti National Park, marveling at the stunning scenery, ever-changing light, and always entertaining wildlife, all explained to you by your expert driver-guide.
The Seronera River weaves its way through this area, providing waters for all species of wildlife. You will also see the distinctive rocky outcrops, the famous kopjes such as ‘moru kopjes’ where you may have the possibility to encounter rhino, ‘Simba kopje’ where lions prefer for sunset, ‘Masai kopjes’ and many others which characterize the Serengeti landscape. Lunch will be an unforgettable experience, enjoyed in the middle of the bush.
The myriad animals and birds are the ‘stars of the show’ and Nature’s dramas can unfold at any time. Of course, the animals don’t work to a timetable, so we may find lion or leopard, elephant and zebra, cheetah and antelope at any time on our drives. At the end of the afternoon, we return to the camp for dinner and some much-needed rest.
After our morning game drive, perhaps trying to find any animal we head south-east towards Ngorongoro. If it has not already struck you with its vastness, Serengeti’s ‘endless plains’ will certainly now make a deep impression on you as we take the long, straight road which passes Simba Kopjes (famous from ‘The Lion King’) to reach Naabi Hill Gate, close to the divide between Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Here you can gather information at the gate’s visitor center, clamber up the hill for superb views back over the plains, or look out for a colorful agama lizard among the rocks.
Enjoy a truly pleasant public campsite located high up on the crater rim. The incredible views down and across the famous crater will surely stay with you forever. Our cook will prepare meals and set up tents while you may be marveling at the natural wonder that defines Ngorongoro.
Eat your delicious breakfast in the morning, and then lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by your cook for you to take out on safari. Your evening meal will be a full, delicious, and well-cooked dinner at Simba A Campsite by your master cook.
After our morning visit to the incomparable crater and then lunch, we will have a 3-hour journey, covering the 200 km back to Arusha.
From our accommodation, we set off after breakfast, with a 6 am departure to reach the rim and then descend into the vast crater itself. On one side there’s the Lerai Forest, a classic mountain forest landscape with almost tropical characteristics. This is good elephant country, so keep your eyes peeled. By the side of the nearby swampland is what is sometimes called the ‘elephant graveyard’ as the mighty male tuskers at the end of their lives come to chew on the soft, swampland grasses once their teeth have failed them.
The crater has a population of around 120 lions, with well-defined territories; 15,000 wildebeest, 9,000 zebra, 400 hyenas, and around 50 black rhino. Many wildebeest and other herd animals are resident, benefiting from the many sources of year-round waters and are boosted by some migratory in season.
Buffalo, Thomson’s gazelle, and eland are also present in numbers. Hippos can be found in pools and swampland, and highland birdlife is colorful and plentiful around the waters. Flamingos can often be seen in Lake Magadi, which occupies part of the crater floor.
Breakfast and lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, provided by our cook for you to take out on safari and enjoyed after your morning game drive or enjoyed hot meals back at Simba A campsite. As today is your departure day, please note that dinner tonight is included in the hotel in Arusha.
Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel before we take you back to the airport for your flight. Check-in and check-out at 10:00 am.
Your departure can only take place on Day 6 if you have pre-booked a domestic flight which leaves from Kilimanjaro International Airport at 20:00 hours onward or an international flight which leaves at 21:00 hours or after. Otherwise, you will need to relax in your inclusive room in Arusha.
After your exhilarating time on safari, you may want to extend your Tanzanian holiday with time on Zanzibar’s wonderful beaches.
